About the Author
Dr. Seymour J. Perlin grew up in Mountaindale, NY, a small rural village 100 miles north of New York City. Dr. Perlin moved to the Bronx in 1945 when he started his freshman year at New York University at the University Heights Campus. (Please see his historical web site Bronx Synagogues
.) After graduating from NYU, the author served in the U.S. military and began his career in South Bronx public elementary school administration. He was an assistant principal at P.S. 39 (Longwood Avenue), and the principal of P.S. 59 (Bathgate Avenue). The author earned his doctorate from NYU.
After living in the Bronx with his wife and children for many years, Dr. Perlin moved his family to the Rockland County suburb of New York City. He retired from the NYC Board of Education in 1990. For the past fifteen years, the author has taught courses in American History at St. Thomas Aquinas College and Dominican College, both located in Rockland County. Dr. Perlin's current research largely centers on the cultural and social history of American Jewish immigration.
